  1. The two most important works of post-Biblical
  2. Jewish literature, the Babylonian and the
  3. Palestinian (or Jerusalem) Talmud provide a
  4. compilation of ancient Jewish law and
  5. tradition. The Babylonian Talmud was edited
  6. at the end of the 5th century AD and is the
  7. more authoritative version for later Judaism;
  8. both Talmuds are written in a mix of Hebrew
  9. and Aramaic. They contain the commentary
  10. (gemara) on the Mishnah (early rabbinical
  11. commentaries compiled c. AD 200), and the
  12. material can be generally divided into
  13. halakhah, consisting of legal and ritual
  14. matters, and aggadah, concerned with ethical,
  15. theological, and folklorist matters.
